commodity = 1. something that is bought and sold 2. something or someone that is useful or valued http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/commodity
1. Of course there is a huge market of art being bought and art being sold. Billions of $ gets spend every year on visual art works. But I personally don't think art it meant to be produced in order to make profit. 2. Art is useful because it can spread messages around the world and valued for the ideas and the work where a art piece came from. Art is all about feelings and the understanding of an artist.
Art is about expressing your emotion into a work that people can relate to. Art can be used in many ways but the most important point about art is communication. its a universal language as people from many different country can just look at an artwork and understand it. Art helps people communicate with each other no matter what race, religion or country you are, art is something that you can share and have different perspective on. People who sells their artwork for money aren't real artist. Real artist is when they can express their emotion and share it with other so that they can relate to it too. "We want what we can't have but commodity make us wants it" (Macklemore) and art isn't a commodity because its shared through out the whole world.
True, but if I were not an art teacher and was a practicing artist and if what you are saying is true( Bunkry), that I cannot be a real artist if i sell my work then how would i live and provide for my family.
No. Art is not JUST a commodity but it IS a commodity in some cases. Art can be created as a hobby. Art can be created individually, and you could still consider it art, but to what extent is it art, if you do not have an audience? Art CAN be a commodity, in terms of some art collectors. For some, it is a competition on who can purchase the most expensive art piece and they may not care whether they think it is an art piece or not. For some, it has become a form of luxury and a sign of status. This is when the idea of "art" is lost and has become a commodity.
You raise some very good points what about the art work you find on a CD how does that relate to the ideas losing it's way when it becomes a commodity?
