  2. Art can be anything the artist wants it to be.
Art can be anything the audience interprets it to be.
It can be both expression and a representation for there is a large overlap with them.
Expression generally refers to emotions and an art piece can represent emotions.
Emotions are triggered by moments, and these moments can be represented by art as well.

  3. expression = the act of making your thoughts and feelings known by a speech, writing, or some other method
representation = something that stands for something else or something that is created to look like a particular thing or person

I don't think that art is either one thing or the other. I think, if art is representing feelings then it tends to be an expression. If it is expressing a specific theme then it tends to be a representation. MIND BLOWING

  4. That is Mind Blowing, it is hard to understand and put it into context but i like your response and it makes sense to me. Can you provide an example two pieces of art that represent your ideas. WELL DONE CONNER.

  5. I don't have specific examples but when someone goes through a phase in life which is influencing his/her feelings and he/she decides to visualize these feelings by creating something, then thats a expression in my view. (for example a breast cancer survivors response to the disease by creating an art work, expressing his/her feelings)
When someone wants spread a message of a problem for example, then that is a representation in my view. A representation of an issue. (for example the frensh guy from the ted talk video, who traveled the world and hung up posters and pictures everywhere)

  6. In many ways you are right but are we then saying JR (the french guy) is not expressing anything? Rather then just representing certain issues of interest or local topics. Interesting!

  7. I personally feel like art is more expressive when it's abstract, and more representative when it depicts something easily recognised by people (just my opinion). For example, I thought Bunkry's self-portrait with a flower demonstrated more emotional connection between the artwork and the artist, than my oil painting of Angkor Wat.

  8. Hi Sarah nice to hear from you, you are right in the way that you have a clear representation of a subject, but is there passion and expression involved with the way that you have painted it. Does the way we do things (the method) have an impact?

  9. I feel that art doesn't always have to be an expression or a representation, sometimes it can be both. It also depends on the style of the artwork. To me, expression is more personal and emotional, representation is more about reality and symbolism. During our landscape unit, I recreated a painting that incorporated both. It was a representation of the forest that I've been to but, I used to colors to express my emotion. To me, the real question is: what is art if its not an expression and not a representation? Would it still be art?
