What are the standards by which we judge artwork?

  1. Well, i think good art is attractive, has meaning, and understandable by its make you think about things what you would not predict. There is no good or bad in Art but we can make judgements by comparing similar styled artwork at same unit ( f. e. two landscape paintings or two oil portrait) by their quality or which one is or looks more skillfully and comparing it to our World view.

  2. I feel that the standard is different depending on the style and medium used. Mostly we'd judge it based on it's quality and to an extend, its significances. We then judge the techniques and skills the artist apply and decide their level of talent. Another way we look at the standard is if the message the artist is trying to express conveys to the audience. If the audience is confused not on purpose, then it makes the artwork somewhat weak. Personally I feel that the first questions that comes to mind is: is this artwork aesthetically pleasing compared to others? How original is the artwork? Everyone will have different opinions on the first answer but, not the second. We all have different tastes in art, how one person judges and artwork might be different from another. But its better to look at an artwork from and with different perspectives. In the end, we usually make a conclusion. Is artwork is good or bad?

  3. Different people have different standard for art and different opinions on what qualifies as art and quality pieces of art. For example to a veteran and successful art critic may view a piece of artwork with and be critical in his opinion whereas someone of much lesser experience would not be as critical and therefore his standard for the art piece is not as high. However, I believe that everyone bases their standard of art with the same criteria. This includes how you personally feel about the artwork, such as the visual qualities you like/dislike about it, as well as their feelings towards the piece technically, such as composition, colors that work well together and other artistic aspects that the artist has used.

  4. Art is, and always will be, in the "eye of the beholder". Thus, the standards for how we judge an artwork is instinctive and natural. I personally don't stand in front of an artwork for hours to judge whether it is good or bad, I'll just either be captivated by the piece, or I won't.

  5. All great comments guy's, when we look and create art we use the formal elements of art, line form texture etc. But what else do we look at for example, cultural context, meaning and symbolism. How does this effect the way we judge art?

  6. Art can be represented in many and a variety of forms in both 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional and to be able to judge those artworks can be really difficult and in terms of the society, the standards of judging an artwork relies on the attractiveness and the meaning behind the artwork that the author is trying to express and send to their targeted audience. But although this is how the society wants us to think, how we judge an artwork is more than just the two points mentioned, it is the why and the what of the artwork. Why is the artwork there? is there a reason why it should be created and shared? what is it? what kind of communication are you trying to make? this is how we judge art and again, it is not about how aesthetic the artwork and the message, it is way beyond that.

  7. We judge artwork by whether we like it or not. And this varies on how we judge our likes and dislikes. This can be influenced by the way we can relate to the art piece to our personal lives. It can be related to our memory, our culture, our social lives, and more. The more connection the artwork has to these things, the more intrigued we are. There is always a reason for our preferences, even if we may not know it.

  8. I think that there are 3 major points in which art can be judged:
    1. Techniques
    2. Meaning
    3. Materials
However, the judgement of art depends on personal prefence and opinions. There might be an art piece which no one likes, but for one person it is like a visualization of a memory or something important to that person, which then is the reason for that person to respond positive to that piece of art.

  9. there isn't a definite standard on the way you should judge an artwork because everybody will have opinions on it. i think for an artwork to be judge correctly, the person have to be open-minded so that they can understand an artwork better looking for its meaning, media used and also how its displayed and whether its aesthetic pleasing for others. again not all people are open-minded so we have close-minded people who only judge an artwork by its aesthetics and would not look for its meaning or any other aspect and in my own point of view, modernisation have played a big role as people are becoming more open-minded and can understand an artwork better. even if people are coming open-minded, everyone will still have their own opinions so its impossible to put a standard how to judge an artwork.
