Who decides on who the artists are?
Hi guys, have a read of this article it posses some very interesting ideas and notions about who decides who the artists are. I would really like to know your thoughts and get some information and discussion based on the ways of knowing. Look forward to hearing your response.
I personally think that historic pieces hold higher values especially because they reflect the contemporary culture. For example, Angkor Wat's stone murals are highly respected and are considered more than just art as they demonstrate the life style and the culture during the time period. Other times, historic pieces of art are valued based on their conditions and subject matter.
ReplyDeleteThings that people considered art in the past may not be considered art now and more commonly, vice versa.
ReplyDeleteBefore the Enlightenment, pottery was not considered a form of art and instead was considered only a craftsman. However, these crafting works that were created in history is in many cases, considered as art in modern times.
Back then, people found pottery of less value and more meaningless then say, a painting, because paintings were more exotic. There weren't as many people (back then) who had the skill to paint realistically, and artists often painted for people of higher statuses, as there were lack of ability of documentation in the past. Therefore, there was a sense of importance and value. Whereas, with pottery, it was a daily material and people didn't find anything special in it, so they did not value it very much.
The pottery made in those times now are valued much more, as "art" is presented in more general terms today, as the pottery requires the elements and principles of art and also carries a message from history.
Hardly agree with Haruki!!
ReplyDeleteAlso if we think about we can see lot of artists who became famous after death for example Van Gogh. Who produced more than 900 artworks but only sold 1. At that time his artwork were described as dark, liveliness. But today we consider Van Gogh as the one of the greatest and most influential artist.
Historic pieces does not have the same value as the modern time as the longer the artwork exist the more value it has like a bottle of wine. the value increases if its older as audience now are more open minded compared to the past as now we look for so many elements in an artwork and we appreciate the artwork more therefore the value of the historic artwork increases. the value is higher as the artist of the work no longer exist therefore making it a one of a kind work.
ReplyDeleteAll you views are very interesting, I would say that the value and meaning have to change because of our perspective. Looking back in time at a piece changes it's very nature because we are not connected to what was happening at the time and place, we can only guess from clues that are left for us to make sense of. We are looking at art from a second hand perspective and because we have the understanding, now in modern times, the implications and changes certain artworks or artifacts had on the world we can be judgmental in knowledge of the past to present.
ReplyDeleteWe have no idea about the value of and impact some of you might have on the art in the future we can only make predictions on what we have to view now. We cannot change the past but we can shape the future and if any thing history is a very important tool in understanding the impact that we as artists can have on the world.
WOW THAT IS DEEP MAN - THIS IS GREAT TOK - KEEP IT UP!
This is what you guys should be thinking about in terms of a theme or narrative in your work. This kind of understanding allows you the opportunity to produce work on another level - it means that you can produce personally relevant work that are you as a person are passionate about to inform and play an important role in society-ies (function and purpose). What do you want your work to be about man? Pretty little drawings of flowers or art work that communicates significance and speaks to cultures. Further more providing you the opportunity to explore ideas/subjects form different cultural perspectives.
ReplyDeleteWhat are you doing with you art work? This is a question you should ask your self at this level.
